Description
This course is designed to train individuals who are required to operate high voltage and low voltage equipment and hold a current qualification or relevant certificates.
Our courses have been tailored based on industry best-practice and to be in accordance with the relevant standards and legislations.
The course will be delivered by an experienced ESI professional, bringing a depth of knowledge and experience to the learner.
The High Voltage and Low Voltage Field Operator Initial course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to understand and safely act as an Authorised Operator on High Voltage and Low Voltage plant. Emphasis is placed on practical switching exercises, performed on the Client’s own HV and LV equipment. Participants are also taught switching theory and the responsibilities of permit users and recipients. This Course addresses standards and legislation, and the site’s specific HV and LV procedures, including switching officer responsibilities, access, test and work permit issuing and recipient duties.
Field Operator training is required for operators to switch HV and LV plant and issue permits. Initial training is then refreshed every 3 years to maintain current competency.

Course aim
The aim of the course is to provide the learners with the opportunity to establish competency, knowledge and skills to safely act as a High Voltage and Low Voltage Field Operator.
Target learner group
The target participants for this course are employees currently working within the Australian Electricity Supply Industry. This includes employees of network asset owners, contractors and sub-contractors in electricity Generation, Transmission and Distribution.
Those who work on the network must maintain currency of skills and competency in a range of safety and technical competencies. Relevant safety related training programs are often mandated by regulation or industry agreements and documented in state codes of practice.
Most participants will be licensed and trade qualified or hold a Certificate in a related technical discipline. In addition to trade qualifications, the participant groups will have completed a range of electrical and plant safety related training programs related to the roles they hold. Due to the significant safety risks in the industry these employees work within highly proceduralised workplaces with mature workplace safety systems.
Workers in the industry are required to regularly complete workplace safety risk assessment and work planning documentation, and therefore bring a solid foundational understanding of risk assessment and workplace safety documentation concepts and practices to the program.

Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, a participant will have developed an understanding of the following:
- The legislative framework that governs work activities on their site;
- Relevant regulations and enterprise procedures;
- Hazards associated with equipment and balance of plant;
- The work permit process from application, preparation, isolation, issue, completion, cancellation and restoration, in compliance with your enterprise procedures;
- Operation of high voltage, low voltage, control and protection devices associated with the site;
- The application and removal of fixed and portable earthing equipment, in compliance with enterprise procedures.

- Personal Protective Equipment (e.g. Hard Hat, Safety Footwear, Approved Hi-Vis Clothing, Safety Glasses).

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:
- Theory/Written Assessment
- Direct Observation/Practical Assessment
- Portfolio/Logbook

To participate in this course, learners are required to:
- have current certification in the required prerequisites:
- UEECD0007 Apply work health and safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
- UEECD0044 Solve problems in multiple path circuits
- UEECD0046 Solve problems in single path circuits
- UEECD0051 Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
- UEEEL0020 Solve problems in low voltage a.c. circuits
- UEEEL0021 Solve problems in magnetic and electromagnetic devices
- UETDREL001 Apply environmental requirements
- UETDREL004 Operate plant and equipment in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus
- UETDREL005 Work safely in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus
- be literate in spoken English and competent in reading, writing, and numeracy.
- be sufficiently fit to participate.
Accreditation Status
Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
