Description

This course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate and maintain chainsaws in line with industry and workplace requirements. Participants will learn how to identify chainsaw components, conduct pre-start checks, carry out routine maintenance, and safely operate a chainsaw when cross-cutting and undertaking basic cutting tasks.
The training emphasises hazard identification, risk control, and the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working in vegetation management and utility environments. On completion, participants will be able to confidently operate and maintain a chainsaw while applying safe work practices and complying with relevant legislation, standards, and organisational procedures.

Target learner group

This course is designed for individuals who are required to safely operate a hand-held chainsaw to carry out routine work tasks. It is suitable for entry-level workers, students, or individuals seeking to develop practical chainsaw operation skills for use in outdoor work environments.

The course is relevant to people working, or intending to work, in industries such as forestry, agriculture, landscaping, horticulture, conservation and land management, parks and gardens, and local government outdoor maintenance roles. Learners will gain the skills and knowledge required to safely cross-cut fallen timber using appropriate cutting techniques, maintain a hand-held chainsaw in working condition, and follow workplace health and safety procedures.

No prior experience with chainsaws is required, and there are currently no occupational licensing, legislative, or certification requirements for this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment approach

Learners will be assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Theory/Written Assessment
  • Direct Observation/Practical Assessment

Accreditation Status

Nationally recognised training.
Upon successful completion, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
